New Surgery Spotlight: DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction

Take a look at August’s Surgery Spotlight featuring Maurice Nahabedian, MD performing a delayed left breast reconstruction using a deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap reconstruction on a 43-year-old woman who has had prior radiation therapy. DIEP flaps are frequently chosen for autologous reconstruction because they can be harvested with no muscle and minimal fascial sacrifice. In this video, observe how Dr. Nahabedian marks the surgical site and begins his dissection. Once the internal mammary artery and vein are exposed, and the DIEP flap has been elevated watch Dr. Nahabedian’s microsurgery technique as the new breast is reconstructed. The video is now streaming for free on PSEN, or can be purchased as part of an online course to receive CME credit.

Dr. Nahabedian‘s primary areas of interest are breast reconstruction with perforator flaps that include DIEP, SGAP, and SIEA flaps. He has performed over 1,000 breast reconstructions using flaps, as well as over 600 reconstructions using implants. He has also conducted numerous research projects on breast reconstruction, breast reduction and microsurgery, which have been published and presented in journals and at meetings around the world. Dr. Nahabedian is a Professor of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University and Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at John Hopkins University. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.
